SON OF DAVE, the one and only harmonica and beatbox blues maverick is back for another season…
SON OF DAVE – Brighton 01/12 BRIGHTON, THE HOPE & RUIN
One-of-a-kind bluesman Son of Dave heads to the Hope & Ruin, Brighton next month…
Having seen his music picked to feature in several gritty crime dramas of late (Breaking Bad/Preacher), tongue-firmly-in-cheek SoD decided to have a pop at creating and soundtracking one of his own on latest album: “Music For Cop Shows”. He’ll be performing tracks from the record and old favourites too, promising as ever his incredible “one-man harmonica and beat-box experience”.
Music For Cop Shows (released on 27th October via Goddamn Records) is classic S.o.D., loaded with instrumental hooks, original blues flavoured songs, irresistible grooves and sly madness. His music has appeared in Breaking Bad, Bloodline, Preacher and other television crime dramas, which seems to have encouraged him to go where the market is, and create a loose cannon of ditties harking back to 1970’s cop shows. Or not. It’s typical Son of Dave messing with you, using ingredients only he can cook with. Fans know it well. It’s his eighth album, and he’s not made a weak one yet.
The artist himself on ‘Music For Cop Shows’ says:
“I got the call from Mr. Big of Big Records, you know? They got another tune into yet another crime drama. They keep asking for more though. so I made this record for ’em. ‘Stick that in your soundtrack’ I said.
“I fantasise ’bout making the theme song to a 1970’s cop show. Time travel is hard on this old Bluesman’s bowels however. These days, telly’s heavier and harder I think. Not many heroes. Even the news seems scarier. Maybe this will help things from being too damned serious. The truth is bloody awful enough, I hope you find this blues a bit sexier than rising crime rates and sponsored terrorism!”
Son of Dave is fifty years old, and has lived for twenty-one years in the UK, hailing originally from Winnipeg Canada where he was steeped at a young age in the blues-bar tradition. His resumé is long, having had many other successes along the way. He plans to perform until his 80s at least, pointing out that there is no pension plan for Bluesmen, and that the whole live-fast-die-young game is for kids who can’t handle their booze (or for their managers simply after publicity). Returning to his roots in R&B, Son of Dave has racked up 1400 shows over 5 continents and released 7 albums. Over the years SoD has supported Supergrass, Iggy & The Stooges, UB40, Yardbirds, Heavy Trash and jammed with Spinal Tap, Neil Young, Cindi Lauper, Jon Spencer, and many more. An unrecognised genius somewhere between Beck, Muddy Waters and Tom Waits, he’s been sampled by Rizzlekicks and been hired to play Grace Jones’ private party.
New album ‘Music For Cop Shows‘ loosely ties ten new songs together as an imagined 1970’s cop show soundtrack. No stranger to TV and Film, he has performed on Later With Jools Holland (BBC UK) and Taratata (France 1), whilst his music has also been used in the likes of Netflix thrillers Breaking Bad and Preacher, which appear to have been an inspiration for the album title. Check him out live at The Hope and Ruin in Brighton 01/12.
