The Camden Cat

A warm sunny Bank Holiday Monday at The Rose and Crown in Worthing. What an afternoon. Daniel Jeanrenaud turns up with his guitars and Dan on drums and what do you get? A pure afternoon of pure, joyous Rock and Roll and Blues. The man is extraordinary and The Camden Cat was purrfect in Worthing!

About the man

Throughout his career, Daniel Jeanrenaud has shared a bill, and hung out with the likes of; Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Bo Diddley and more with his first band to break into the industry ā€˜The Kingsnakes’ – which he formed with several members of American cult punk band ā€˜The Flamin Groovies.’

Chuck Berry!

Chuck Berry even named Daniel’s favourite Gibson guitar ā€˜Nadine’ after borrowing it on tour at Bill Grahams ā€˜Old Waldorf’ in down town San Francisco. And Daniel unveiled that very guitar played by Chuck Berry himself. Extraordinary to see it and hear it! Daniel told us that Chuck had broken a string whilst playing Nadine!

Lets Go!

We were given a good hour and 30 minutes or so of songs from The Camden Cat, and with Dan on drums – with a short break, splitting the session into two segments. Camden Cat’s material was presented to us with a mix of old school, back in the day rock n roll/blues classics with a Camden Cat twist. Some of the songs were:

Get Up / This House / Camden Cats (a set highlight for me!) / Its Gonna Rain / Let Yourself Go / Shake Rattle and Roll and Folsom Prison Blues. We were also treated to a couple of self-penned rock n roll tunes.

A Video! Folsom!

Authentic rock n roll, right here, right now and live! Daniel played the living daylights out of his customised guitars, both were absolutely gorgeous to look at and hear. Sadly no double bass for this afternoon. The sound and look of the instruments being played for this gig was incredible, and vocals delivered on point all with some moves and chat/banter thrown in.

Dan on Drums, extraordinary to watch and listen. He displayed so many styles and patterns all the while watching Daniel closely following what he was doing.

Every so often we were treated to a dancing display from the audience, including his wife Linda spinning things up. Great fun and added to the rockabilly atmosphere of the afternoon in The Rose and Crown.

Thanks to the Daniel, The Camden Cat for an unusual, fun, music filled afternoon. The crowd demanded an encore, and Daniel and Dan provided an encore, and that was it. Show over.

Daniel has been the man behind a legendary 12-year residency at the Marathon in Camden Town, London he has attracted some big names in his audience including Paul Weller, Jarvis Cocker, The Gallagher brothers, and Amy Winehouse.

I thoroughly recommend you see these guys if you can, or if you catch Daniel playing on the train between London and Brighton, well sit back and enjoy the show!
