The flyer for this event promised us the sounds of the 70’s! On a hot Friday night in Worthing, it was time for another visit to The Factory Live!

Two bands and DJ Mike Read. Loads of classic tunes. One seriously entertaining night.

What a fantastic night of live music! The 70s music night was packed with energy, nostalgia and plenty of dancing, featuring two fantastic live cover bands who really knew how to get the crowd going and a guest performance from DJ/Presenter Mike Read.

The Juice is fronted by Lorna B (vocals, percussion) who paid her dues as a teenager with SHAKATAK and is an in-demand session singer, working with acts like SIMPLE MINDS, DARYL HALL and THE PRETENDERS. ​She has also fronted for Middle Of The Road. The band is made up using information from their website, Gary Osborne (percussion, vocals), Neil Voce (keyboards, vocals), Stewart Gunn (bass), Alan Beadle (guitar) and Clive Caswell (drums). They are talented local musicians; the band have an electric energy, just great fun and a must see!

Percussionist Gary Osborne, wearing a fine shirt this evening, was recently inducted into The Guinness Book of Records.A successful songwriter, with songs like Elton John’s Blue Eyes, Kiki Dee’s Amoureuse and Justin Hayward’s Forever Autumn to his credit, Gary wrote the Lyrics for Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War Of The Worlds which, after 9 ‘Sold Out’ Arena Tours and 16 million record sales, is now officially the most successful Musical Immersive Experience of all time, after over 31.000 performances (and counting). He has even co-written a track for Alice Cooper!

As the second band of the night, The Juice, kept that energy and 70’s vibe going, delivering another great selection of favourites that had everyone singing along and dancing well into the night.

The Juice, who picked up the 70’s baton and ran with it opened up with I’m Coming Out, Celebration and I Love The Nightlife. More big tunes, more familiar choruses and even more people suddenly discovering that they could still dance to those old classics like I Cant Stand The Rain and Good Times.

There were moments when the dance floor looked like a cross between a disco and a rock concert! A highlight for me was a brilliant KC and The Sunshine band medley. Fabulous stuff!

There are certain decades that should probably remain safely in the past? Platform shoes, questionable hairstyles, brown wallpaper and anything involving fondue, for example. The music, however, is another matter entirely.

If anyone had been hoping for a quiet sit-down and a sensible conversation tonight, they were clearly at the wrong gig. The volume went up with The Juice, the energy levels of Lorna and the band went off the chart. Everyone was transported back to an era of glitter balls and light up dance floors with Aint Nobody, Higher Ground and a huge well received version of Son of A Preacher Man.

They even ran slightly overtime with Donna Summers Hot Stuff, as the audience was having such a great time.

Lorna ended the set by telling us “You’ve been Juiced!”. Indeed we have. A great full on performance.

The Big Yellow Taxi offer a wide variety of music, Jigs and Reels, lots of strong rock numbers, ballads, instrumentals combined with a blend of vocal harmonies, they deliver a varied style of acoustic folk-rock. Having been at the forefront of Worthing’s live music scene for decades, these guys put on one heck of a show that will get you moving!

TAXI!

From the moment The Big Yellow Taxi took to the stage with It Must Be Love, Mama Told Me Not To Come, and 70’s banger Oliver’s Army , the atmosphere was joyous.

These guys had clearly pulled in a large audience. They admitted they have been around for a while playing many local venues. I had never caught them live before, and so was looking forward to seeing them play. I soon learned why they had a good following.

Their set was packed with classic 70s hits, brilliantly performed and capturing the spirit of the era perfectly. The set also included I only Wanna Be With You, Escape ( The Pina Colada song), and  Dreadlock Holiday. We had keys, guitar, bass, mandolin (for Maggie May), and a recorder, there may have been more!

All these guys are great performers, a shout to Gerry on electric guitar for his spot on rendition of The Commodores track Easy and a tasty guitar solo during Pink Floyds track Another Brick In The Wall. Nailed it and made it look effortless.

There was plenty of singing, plenty of dancing and quite possibly a few people in the packed crowd, and maybe the even band members, wondering the following morning why they thought doing that particular dance move was a good idea! Well played The Big Yellow Taxi.

Mike Read has been a broadcaster since 1976, best known for having been a DJ with BBC Radio 1, and television host for music chart series Top of the Pops and more!

Mike currently hosts The Heritage Chart Show on various radio stations and Talking Pictures TV. Tonight was going to be different! He strapped into his acoustic guitar for a short but very sweet set joining The Big Yellow Taxi and including a couple of rock and roller songs, Roll Over Beethoven and Nick Lowes or Dave Edmonds version of I Knew The Bride.

It was good to have an after gig catch up and chat with Mike after his fabulous triple tracker set and chat about a future TV Quiz show project, sorry sworn to secrecy! Watch this space!

Good Times!

A brilliant evening of live entertainment, great atmosphere and timeless music. Two excellent bands, a fantastic crowd and, in the words of Chic, Good Times! This was a night to remember — we’d definitely do it all again! Well, that was a indeed trip back to the 70s and a bit from either side — and thankfully nobody asked me to squeeze back into my old high waisted flares!

A brilliant night of 70’s nostalgia, with a couple of tunes from earlier and the 80’s, no matter! It was all good. The 70’s may be long gone, but judging by this crowd, they certainly aren’t forgotten.

All in all, it was a properly enjoyable night of 70s nostalgia, packed with great music and good humour and banter, much of it around band members ages! Two bands, one fantastic crowd and enough classic tunes to make me want to dig out the old vinyl — assuming I can still find the record player!
