Emergency! An outbreak of Skurvi in Brighton

SKURVI

Friday 15 December at The Prince Albert saw Brightron punk/oi outfit Skurvi hit the stage. Skurvi came together through a love of cheap booze, cheap laughs and punk rock. With old-school style and swagger, (Cock Sparrer, Peter and the Test Tube Babies) Skurvi deliver a slap round the face anthemic punk rock with power, passion and “piss ups”. They have been playing together for a fairly short while, but when I met up with them they had just finished a support slot with the Cockney Rejects. How did we miss that one?

THE BAND

Perry (perry-scope) – Guitar & Backing vocals,

Liam – Bass & Backing vocals,

Jimmy Skurvi – Lead vocals,

Craig – Drums

Got to say these guys were unstoppable once going. Perry gave a strong guitar presence with some seriously hooking you riffs and backing vox. Liam providing a solid layer of bass goodness to the sound and working with percussion. Bumped into Liam before during a previous bass player role in Pig City Angels. On drums at the back is Craig, this man is a force of nature he took drumming to a high level with patterns, fills and sheer power. He is extraordinary to watch – just watch him and those sticks fly! The man at the front is Jimmy. He holds everything together and is in control of the band and the crowd. His vocal blended seamlessly to the powerful sound generated by the band.  These guys were guests of The DeRellas for their Christmas party and they certainly provided a spirit rousing start to the night.

THE SET

These guys delivered one hell of a performance. A generous slice of good old fashioned school of punk rock material, all with finely tuned lyrics and more than a dash of humor from Jimmy, at times reducing  the crowd to hysterics. Perry managed to get a set list for me with some freshly used chewing gum attached! Used no doubt to hold it in place during the set – thanks for that.  Skurvi have an album out “Get em in” and some of the tracks played were from that release.

This was a set of straightforward and seriously enjoyable stirring riot of punk and included 3 Cheers, She’s coming, Football, and the absolute belter Skum Rises – this song full of venom, hooks, humour and a barrowload of rock n roll – any song that can squeeze in “you’re s**t and you know you are” and multi uses of the C word is ok in my book. Spunk Volcano and the Eruptions are echoed , and that’s not a surprise as the track was written by Spunk himself Awesome track! The set closed with Her and Skinhead. A great 30 minute set that belted past and was over too quickly.

Terrific guys, great to meet you and hope to see you again soon. And I gotta grab a CD!
