Idle Talk

Idle Talk are a four piece band from Brighton playing dynamic, original songs.

Formed in early 2015, the band have been complimented for their tight performance, accomplished songwriting and their dedication to the live energy and spirit of the mod scene which influenced them. Taking elements of indie, soul and psychedelia, their music applies a relatable modern commentary on the everyday frustrations of life. Within their first few months together, the band were invited to support iconic mod legends From the Jam (Sound Affects 35th Anniversary Tour) and Secret Affair (My World Tour 2015) which saw them playing to a sold-out home crowd at Brighton’s Concorde 2 across both dates.

Members: Louis May, Matt Geary, David Bishop, Andrew Motley

Brighton Pier

Idle Talk had been invited to take part in the MOD Weekender being held on Brighton Pier in the family friendly Horatio’s Bar. It had been a while since I last saw the guys from Idle Talk for a photo shoot and in front of a few hundred people as guests of From The Jam. Sadly Andrew couldn’t make this show on the pier. Brighton had just been delivered the biggest electrical storm for years and the Bank Holiday Monday weather was well, pretty much the usual Bank Holiday weather. The city was doused with rain, drizzle and a dense fog. This of course sadly had an impact on the number of people on the pier for the afternoon. Horatio’s Bar is usually packed on a sunnier day.

The Set

Idle Talk had carefully selected some appropriate tunes for the afternoon sessions, and the gave respect to covers of “Substitute”, “David Watts” including some obligatory participation with shouts of “oy” coming from the audience, a super acoustic version of “Thats Entertainment”, and “Biff Bang Pow”. The guys also played some of their own material “Inner Demons”, “Hard To Identify” and their soon to be released single “Against It All”. All the songs well delivered but we did miss Andrew not being there to supply trumpet and additional percussion on the Idle Talk songs. A great set and went down well with the people in the bar. Always great to see a band sell a few CD’s after a show. I was talking to one lady and her husband from Inverness who bought the CD, they had really enjoyed what they had seen and heard.

Whats next?

Chatting to Idle Talk is always fun, sharing stories and catch ups is always a highlight when meeting them. Louis and the band are looking forward to the release of their new single – out on 30 June 2017 called “Against It All”, and they were thrilled to be able to say it is going to be available on limited edition vinyl. The band have a few dates coming in, so my advice is to check out their Facebook page and go see them play.
